I found This article interested while researching this topic. It list alot of fears that Americans have for the troops that are now dedicated to Afghanistan. Oddly the same myopic view of the world has cropped up again. Do they not seem to realize that these same challenges have been facing Canadian soldiers and other allies since nearly the day after the 9/11 attacks? it's terribly insulting to me that they are so stressed about deploying troops that should have been there instead of Iraq since day one. Obviously the 'war on terror' is everyone's issue but. lest we forget we are not the nation who was attacked. Thus far, seeing as we have long established the terrorist who attacked the twin towers originated from Afghanistan and nearby regions, we have been essentially fighting their fight! Sorry but it's about bloody time we had a little more help from them. I realize this seems very a unsympathetic view towards the troops themselves. It is a shame they are needed and have be there. It is a shame that any of our soldiers have to be there. I regret every death and every struggle my own Canadian brothers and sisters suffer. I still say to Americans. It is time to give more aid to your neighbours.. actually.. it is past time.

Until the deaths of Canadian soldiers killed in
Afghanistan, probably almost
no one outside their home country had been aware that
Canadian troops are
deployed in the region. And as always Canada will bury its
dead, just as the
rest of the world, as always will forget its sacrifice,
just as it always
forgets nearly everything Canada ever does.

It seems that Canada's historic mission is to come to
the selfless aid both
of its friends and of complete strangers, and then, once
the crisis is over,
to be well and truly ignored.

Canada is the perpetual wallflower that stands on the edge
of the hall,
> waiting for someone to come and ask her for a dance. A
fire breaks out, she risks
life and limb to rescue her fellow dance-goers, and
suffers serious
injuries. But when the hall is repaired and the dancing
resumes, there is Canada,
the wallflower still, while those she once helped
glamorously cavort across the
floor, blithely neglecting her yet again.

That is the price Canada pays for sharing the North
American continent with
the United States, and for being a selfless friend of
Britain in two global
conflicts. For much of the 20th century, Canada was torn
in two different

gratitude it deserved. Yet its purely voluntary

neglect, its

The Second World War provided a re-run. The Canadian navy
began the war with
a half dozen vessels, and ended up policing nearly half of
the Atlantic
against U-boat attack. More than 120 Canadian warships
participated in the
Normandy landings, during which 15,000 Canadian soldiers
went ashore on D-Day
alone. Canada finished the war with the third-largest navy
and the fourth-largest
air force in the world.

The world thanked Canada with the same sublime indifference
as it had the
previous time. Canadian participation in the war was
acknowledged in film only

campaign in which

Moreover, Canada is every bit as querulously alert to the
achievements of
its sons and daughters as the rest of the world is
completely unaware of them.
The Canadians proudly say of themselves - and are unheard
by anyone else -
that 1% of the world's population has provided 10% of
the world's peacekeeping
forces. Canadian soldiers in the past half century have
been the greatest
peacekeepers on Earth - in 39 missions on UN mandates, and
six on non-UN
peacekeeping duties, from Vietnam to East Timor, from Sinai
to Bosnia.

Yet the only foreign engagement that has entered the
popular on-Canadian
imagination was the sorry affair in Somalia, in which
out-of-control
paratroopers murdered two Somali infiltrators. Their
regiment was then disbanded in disgrace - a uniquely Canadian act of self-abasement for
which, naturally, the
Canadians received no international credit.

I don't get to vote for President this primary season. I live in Michigan. The party leaders (both here and in D.C.) couldn't get their act together, and thus our votes will not be counted.

So, if you live in Pennsylvania, can you do me a favor? Will you please cast my vote -- and yours -- on Tuesday for Senator Barack Obama?

I haven't spoken publicly 'til now as to who I would vote for, primarily for two reasons: 1) Who cares?; and 2) I (and most people I know) don't give a rat's ass whose name is on the ballot in November, as long as there's a picture of JFK and FDR riding a donkey at the top of the ballot, and the word "Democratic" next to the candidate's name.

Seriously, I know so many people who don't care if the name under the Big "D" is Dancer, Prancer, Clinton or Blitzen. It can be Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Barry Obama or the Dalai Lama.

Well, that sounded good last year, but over the past two months, the actions and words of Hillary Clinton have gone from being merely disappointing to downright disgusting. I guess the debate last week was the final straw. I've watched Senator Clinton and her husband play this game of appealing to the worst side of white people, but last Wednesday, when she hurled the name "Farrakhan" out of nowhere, well that's when the silly season came to an early end for me. She said the "F" word to scare white people, pure and simple. Of course, Obama has no connection to Farrakhan. But, according to Senator Clinton, Obama's pastor does -- AND the "church bulletin" once included a Los Angeles Times op-ed from some guy with Hamas! No, not the church bulletin!

This sleazy attempt to smear Obama was brilliantly explained the following night by Stephen Colbert. He pointed out that if Obama is supported by Ted Kennedy, who is Catholic, and the Catholic Church is led by a Pope who was in the Hitler Youth, that can mean only one thing: OBAMA LOVES HITLER!

Yes, Senator Clinton, that's how you sounded. Like you were nuts. Like you were a bigot stoking the fires of stupidity. How sad that I would ever have to write those words about you. You have devoted your life to good causes and good deeds. And now to throw it all away for an office you can't win unless you smear the black man so much that the superdelegates cry "Uncle (Tom)" and give it all to you.

But that can't happen. You cast your die when you voted to start this bloody war. When you did that you were like Moses who lost it for a moment and, because of that, was prohibited from entering the Promised Land.

How sad for a country that wanted to see the first woman elected to the White House. That day will come -- but it won't be you. We'll have to wait for the current Democratic governor of Kansas to run in 2016 (you read it here first!).

There are those who say Obama isn't ready, or he's voted wrong on this or that. But that's looking at the trees and not the forest. What we are witnessing is not just a candidate but a profound, massive public movement for change. My endorsement is more for Obama The Movement than it is for Obama the candidate.

That is not to take anything away from this exceptional man. But what's going on is bigger than him at this point, and that's a good thing for the country. Because, when he wins in November, that Obama Movement is going to have to stay alert and active. Corporate America is not going to give up their hold on our government just because we say so. President Obama is going to need a nation of millions to stand behind him.

I know some of you will say, 'Mike, what have the Democrats done to deserve our vote?' That's a damn good question. In November of '06, the country loudly sent a message that we wanted the war to end. Yet the Democrats have done nothing. So why should we be so eager to line up happily behind them?

I'll tell you why. Because I can't stand one more friggin' minute of this administration and the permanent, irreversible damage it has done to our people and to this world. I'm almost at the point where I don't care if the Democrats don't have a backbone or a kneebone or a thought in their dizzy little heads. Just as long as their name ain't "Bush" and the word "Republican" is not beside theirs on the ballot, then that's good enough for me.

I, like the majority of Americans, have been pummeled senseless for 8 long years. That's why I will join millions of citizens and stagger into the voting booth come November, like a boxer in the 12th round, all bloodied and bruised with one eye swollen shut, looking for the only thing that matters -- that big "D" on the ballot.

Don't get me wrong. I lost my rose-colored glasses a long time ago.

It's foolish to see the Democrats as anything but a nicer version of a party that exists to do the bidding of the corporate elite in this country. Any endorsement of a Democrat must be done with this acknowledgement and a hope that one day we will have a party that'll represent the people first, and laws that allow that party an equal voice.

Finally, I want to say a word about the basic decency I have seen in Mr. Obama. Mrs. Clinton continues to throw the Rev. Wright up in his face as part of her mission to keep stoking the fears of White America. Every time she does this I shout at the TV, "Say it, Obama! Say that when she and her husband were having marital difficulties regarding Monica Lewinsky, who did she and Bill bring to the White House for 'spiritual counseling?' THE REVEREND JEREMIAH WRIGHT!"

But no, Obama won't throw that at her. It wouldn't be right. It wouldn't be decent. She's been through enough hurt. And so he remains silent and takes the mud she throws in his face.

That's why the crowds who come to see him are so large. That's why he'll take us down a more decent path. That's why I would vote for him if Michigan were allowed to have an election.

But the question I keep hearing is... 'can he win? Can he win in November?' In the distance we hear the siren of the death train called the Straight Talk Express. We know it's possible to hear the words "President McCain" on January 20th. We know there are still many Americans who will never vote for a black man. Hillary knows it, too. She's counting on it.

Pennsylvania, the state that gave birth to this great country, has a chance to set things right. It has not had a moment to shine like this since 1787 when our Constitution was written there. In that Constitution, they wrote that a black man or woman was only "three fifths" human. On Tuesday, the good people of Pennsylvania have a chance for redemption.

I have been following the long, drawn out debate on the blessings of same sex marriages within the Anglican church with great interest. Since it is MY faith that is at war over it. Churches and even families are breaking up over the issue. It's a disgusting display of anti-christian behavior to me. Think about it...would Jesus turn a leper away because he was gay? What right do we as his followers to turn ANYONE... ANYONE away from our faith in any capacity simply because they are different from us. This is decidedly NOT the faith I signed up for. One of the first things I learned even in Sunday school as a child is TOLERANCE.
I do not know how on earth my church has come to this. It is sad and frustrating

The deadly shooting of Iraqi civilians by guards working for Blackwater USA in Baghdad on Sept. 16 should raise many questions about the role of private contractors in U.S. national security. So, too, should the Bush administration's opposition to a House bill that seeks to place all private contractors in Iraq and other combat zones under the jurisdiction of U.S. courts.

The Defense Department's use of a significant number of private contractors for jobs normally done by military personnel started when Washington ended the draft, in 1973. Since the Pentagon no longer relied on the hidden tax of conscription, volunteers had to be paid a reasonable wage. To keep the number of military people small -- and hold down personnel costs -- the Pentagon began contracting out support activities like preparing food for the troops (soldiers call these duties K.P. or kitchen police) and routine maintenance. This trend was accelerated by the assumption of many federal, state and local officials that the private sector was, by definition, more efficient than the government. So government agencies began contracting out as many functions as possible.

In the 30 years since the draft ended, the US military began to rely increasingly on the private sector, even using contractors in combat zones and to provide security or force protection. Yet, the Pentagon did not develop any official policies as to what could and could not be contracted out, or how to hold private individuals accountable for actions outside the U.S.

Because there were no such guidelines, the Bush administration felt free to use contractors to make up for its own failure to send enough troops to stabilize Iraq after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, or to increase the size of ground forces so that they had sufficient strength to combat the insurgency. Now, there are more private contractors in Iraq than U.S. military personnel (180,000 contractors versus 160,000 military personnel). And these contractors are not just doing just KP, but jobs that should be done only by agents of the U.S. government - like security and interrogation of prisoners.

For example, the security services that Blackwater provides to State Department officials can and should be provided by Army personnel. Moreover, given the dangerous security situation in Iraq, these private contractors are far more expensive than military personnel. The full cost (salary, housing, and subsistence) for an Army sergeant would be from $140 to $190 per day. But the government is paying Blackwater six to nine times that amount. Moreover, since many of these freelance warriors were originally trained by the U.S. military, taxpayers are actually paying for them twice.

The important role these contractors play in Iraq was demonstrated during the confirmation hearings for Gen. David Petraeus. When Petraeus was confronted by the fact that, even with the surge, he would not have enough troops to implement his counterinsurgency plan, he insisted that he did -- because he was including the private contractors. Indeed, more private contractors have been killed in Iraq than all the non-U.S. members of the multinational force combined.

Though the deadly shootings of Sept, 16 (at least 13 Iraqi civilians were killed), triggered outrage in Congress and in Iraq, this is not the first case of questionable conduct by private contractors. For example, in December, 2006, a drunken Blackwater contractor killed the guard of Iraq's vice president, Adel Abdul Mehdi. In March, 2004, four armed Blackwater employees blundered into Fallujah in the middle of an U.S. military operation. They were caught and killed by insurgents -- forcing the administration to retaliate against the wishes of American military commanders.

Nor is Blackwater the only private military company causing problems. Personnel from companies like Triple Canopy and Zapata have also engaged in questionable activities.

The House bill is a useful first step to provide accountability. So is the order from Secretary Rice on Friday that special agents from the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security ride with Blackwater agents.

But we should not stop there. We need to begin decreasing the role of these contractors in providing security right now, and start turning these operations over to the military's special forces.

The longer we rely on these private security forces, the more difficult it will be for us to accomplish our objectives. When we do finally extricate ourselves from this quagmire in Iraq, Washington needs to put the contractors back into the kitchen. The government -- and only the government -- must have a monopoly on the use of force.

We know that using private contractors in a combat zone does not save money. If we need a bigger military or a return to conscription to wage preventive wars, let's do it.

As far as know we don't have this kind of operation involved with Canadian war efforts. It seems fairly underhanded to me. Sending our children to private schools is really just veiled segregation. It keeps them separate and estranged from each other. When they attend public schools part of the curriculum by default is TOLERANCE. People cannot learn to accept different cultures if they are never exposed to them. Exposure from childhood is the best kind.
Our health care system needs work, yes. It is still envied around the world. I love living in a country and Province where a homeless man is not turned away at emergency rooms and can receive the same amount of personal care as I do. It speaks of the sense of equality that I feel this country stands for.
Corner stores are being held up for cigarettes and cash as it is. The corner store is one of the highest hit crime spots in the country. Employees already don't feel safe and that's why most of them are owner run. It's hard to get new employees. Owners have their own teen aged children working with them at these stores. If they start selling liquor those helpers are gone because they will have to be over 18 to work there. There goes some of the owners livelihood right there.

These are bad ideas!

Agreed. I understand the anger behind allowing him to speak. It is similar to allowing neo Nazi's to march down the street etc..I get it. I do. It does seem like the university legitimized his position. I understand how many would find that than insulting. Although I must say I feel as though he made a fool of himself and proved himself to be a "crackpot". I also feel that it was all posturing for his people. His "See. I am not afraid of America" macho crap dance.
There is an other way to look at it for Americans as well. You all proved you aren't afraid of him either. You do have a free country. A much more liberating lifestyle than his own country where to speak freely could get you killed. I think Yesterday was a good day in America. You should be proud of yourselves for the event if not for the manner in which the questions were asked. It would have been worse had you not allowed him in the country.

The latest in this on going embarrassment to justice.
A developer was seriously injured in a confrontation with natives occupying a new subdivision in Caledonia yesterday
And no one is being charge as yet. When are the natives going to understand that thier fight isn't with the developers and homeowners but with the federal government.
The other issue I have with all of this is the fact that this is provincial election time in Ontario. So naturally this Caledonia dispute has become a electoral issue. All the hopefuls are spouting off about what they would do if they became premier (for you Americans...that's kinda like Govenor). The thing is, they couldn't do anymore then the present premier is doing. This is s FEDERAL issue. Dalton Maguinty's hands are tied. These are federal treaties that are not being honoured or recognized!
Dalton Macguinty is a very good man. If there were something he could do, he would do it!
I don't see how anyone votes for people who's platforms are simply criticizing the other party!

It is okay to ruin the life and lives of a family for a blow job though right? The private act that didn't affect his job. It wasn't for a bad budget. Wasn't for going to war for no real reason (at least not a reason that has been made public). He didn't make it possible for torture to be acceptable.

It was BJ and that's not acceptable.

Lets be honest with ourselves though. Gonzales is merely a fall guy. This was all planned. he takes the fall then gets to resign with the protection of the Office of the President.
No doubt with a healthy pension to boot.
I am disgusted.
I should be used to it by now though.

Former interim Iraqi prime minister Ayad Allawi, who is trying to put together a new coalition to replace the current Baghdad government headed by Nouri al-Maliki, said yesterday that a powerful Washington lobbying firm is working on his behalf, funded by an Iraqi whom he cannot identify.

Allawi confirmed on CNN's "Late Edition" yesterday that Barbour Griffith & Rogers had been hired "to help us advocate our views, the views of the nationalistic Iraqis, the nonsectarian Iraqis."

Allawi called "accurate" reports that Barbour Griffith is to receive $300,000 over six months "but that these figures are really much less than the figures that are being paid by others, our adversaries." Asked the source of the funds, Allawi said, "I cannot unfortunately divulge his name," adding: "He is a supporter of our program."

Allawi, who is Shiite and a former Baathist, said he "wouldn't frankly be willing to become a prime minister in a sectarian regime . . . but I would play my role in Iraq in whatever capacity is required to change Iraq into a nonsectarian country."

Allawi was appointed interim prime minister in June 2004 -- reportedly at the urging of Robert D. Blackwill, President Bush's special envoy to Iraq, and others -- and was replaced in April 2005, after the Iraqi elections. Five months after Allawi's appointment, Blackwill left the government to join Barbour Griffith.

Allawi's hiring of the firm was first reported last week by IraqSlogger.com. A senior adviser to the firm is Philip D. Zelikow, who resigned as counselor to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in December.

Another of Barbour Griffith's clients is the Kurdistan Regional Government, according to the company's Web site.
