Senator Barack Obama has hit out at "malicious, irresponsible" claims that he was educated at an Islamic fundamentalist madrassa in Indonesia, insisting he has "never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim".

The denial appeared to be a warning to opponents that he would not be "swift boated" in the same way as John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential hopeful.
Mr Kerry, who announced on Wednesday that he would not run for the White House in 2008, was vilified by party activists for his failure to rebut distortions of his Vietnam war record by a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
The attacks added a new verb to the American political lexicon – "to swift boat".
Mr Obama's campaign team at first decided not to respond to the claim, published in the conservative Insight magazine, that he had been enrolled by his father for "at least four years" in a madrassa, a radical Islamist school, that was "espousing Wahhabism".
