I wasn't going to go here but...

when stuffy over privledged British Rock Stars come on Canadian soil and attack my countrymen who live in the most empoverished area of the country without really looking at all the facts and all the sides of the issue I just have to say something.
So yes when I look at those big brown eyes and see how cute these creatures are...my heart tells me NO!
There is just so much more to the story than this. No one is hearing the other side. You can't solve the problem by reaching it at the end of the issue. If there was no demand there would be no hunt. Demand for the seal meat and pelt. Demand for the fish they eat. It isn't just Canada that rely on the fishing in that area. It is fisheries all over the world. We have even had trouble with large ships from as far away as China Over fishing just outside our waters. If you really want to concentrate on the fishermen that are Canadian alone, fine. Then you go to those men and tell them that their only source of income (for only 4 months out of the year, mind!) has now ended and they have to find a new way to feed thier families. These people live on social assistance and employment insurance for the rest of the year! we aren't talking about families getting rich off the fish that aren't eaten by seals! Far from it.
If you want to change this ... go where the big bucks are.
If there is more fish for the seals to feed off then there would be no reason to kill them....right? Don't tell me it is those 50 or so trolleys on our East Coast that are catching all those fish and making it neccessary to kill off Harp seals! It's those huge international fishiers all over the world.
I guess it's just easier to blame us. To make blanket statements and peg as all as cruel murderers instead of doing a little more research
Well, if you aren't going to do the work then...you know what I say?
STAY OUT OF CANADA!!!!

Here is just one little article that will give you some quick facts about the seal hunt

This article was more telling:

The hunters should and could be fined/baned for doing this improperly and inhumanely. There is no excuse for cruelty. What would God want?

When everyone in this world finds a way to treat all God's creatures with the way in which we as people, (also Gods creatures) want to be treated everything will be ok. WHich is unrealistic....but one issue at a time.

I understand people have to, "eat" but there has to be a better way. And if all this attention to this issue will bring out a better way, for all concerned...I am all for it. Sorry Rue, we do not agree on all of this subject.

It's okay that we disagree. Please understand though that I do not neccessarily agree with the hunt. My arguement is that attacking the hunters themselves is a very small part of the problem. it's like putting out the fire when it's already destroyed everything. The larger issue simply isn't being adressed. If the demand for the the fish that the larger international ships are catching wasn't so great. If we could (without starving East coast families) allow enough fish to feed the seals and provide for the world's demand then they wouldn't have a reason for the hunt. The world wide glutony of humanity is the bigger issue here. That and the wealthy companies getting rich off the natural resources in ocean.

We do here in Canada have some native rights issues to that need to be resolved seperately somehow.

What my post was really adressing is the fact that Mr.McCartney just doesn't get it...not all of it anyway. Because of that he is just saying..."this is bad...don't do it"...without offering a legitimate method to resolve the whole issue or offer any feasible alternatives. that simply isn't productive.

Thank you Rue.
He is leading/speaking with his heart. Sometimes solutions are just too hard to see and people react without thinking it through.

I think fines/banishment would take care of the irresponsible hunters, but I agree the picture is much larger. Hatcheries?

Now Mr. McCartney can propose that as a solution..... perhaps? Hell, he could probably fund them...? And I think a real non cruel way or different solution needs to be offered/proposed toward this whole seal thing....very sad, very sad...for all but mostly the seals...sorry it's that nature thang in me : )

I hope we always agree to disagree so lovingly...wouldn't you agree?

Have a good evenin Rue!
